Cross Before Comfort
The Cost of Discipleship
1. Introduction
When Jesus invites us to follow Him, He doesn’t promise an easy road—He promises a worthy one. In this week’s episode, Pastor Jon explores the radical call of Christ to “deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).
In a world obsessed with comfort and convenience, discipleship feels costly. But as we’ll see, the way of the cross is the only path that leads to life, joy, and eternal reward.
2. Main Reflection: Losing to Gain, Dying to Live
Jesus’ call to take up the cross is not a casual invitation; it’s a call to die to self so that we might truly live for Him.
“Discipleship begins where self ends.”
To deny ourselves doesn’t mean self-hatred; it means self-surrender. It’s stepping off the throne of our own lives and allowing Christ to take His rightful seat. True discipleship is costly because it demands that we surrender our pride, control, and comfort.
Jon reminded us through Scripture and story that we can’t carry the cross in one hand and the world in the other. The rich young ruler wanted both and walked away sorrowful. Peter, James, and John left everything and gained the joy of walking with their Savior.
“Salvation is free, but following Jesus will cost you everything.”
The paradox of discipleship is that in losing, we gain; in dying, we live. And yet, even as we bear the cross, we do not walk alone. Jesus carried His cross for us and now walks with us as we carry ours.
3. Key Scripture
“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.”
— Luke 9:23–24 (ESV)“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
— Romans 8:18 (ESV)
4. Practical Takeaway
Following Jesus always costs something—but it’s worth everything.
The cross is not a one-time event; it’s a daily decision.
Ask yourself this week:
What area of my life am I still holding back from Jesus?
What does taking up my cross look like in my home, my habits, or my heart?
Where might God be calling me to surrender and trust Him more deeply?
“The cross isn’t just something Jesus carried for you, it’s something you now carry with Him.”
5. Behind the Mic
In this episode, Jon shared his heart as a pastor and disciple, reminding us that Jesus never promised an easy life but a fulfilled one. He reflected on examples from Scripture and on believers around the world who have counted the cost and found Christ worth it.
He closed with a powerful reminder from missionary Jim Elliot:
“He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
6. Looking Ahead
Next week on The Pleasing God Podcast, we’ll shift from the cost of following Jesus to the community of following Jesus—why discipleship isn’t meant to be a solo journey.
We’ll talk about how the church is essential to our growth, endurance, and joy as followers of Christ.
